This simple air fryer method leads to fluffy, perfectly-cooked sweet potatoes with deliciously crisp skins, and it takes basically zero effort! Serve them with your favorite toppings or alongside your favorite proteins – they’re even great for holidays!

What We Love About This Recipe

  1. The results are perfect. Fully-cooked sweet potatoes, hot and fluffy on the inside yet toasty and crispy on the outside.
  2. There’s very little prep work involved. You do want to wash the potatoes first, and poking vent holes into the potatoes with a fork can take a little effort, but once those steps are done, everything else is up to the air fryer!

Chef’s Tips

  • After the first 30-35 minutes, start checking the sweet potatoes to see if they’re fully-cooked. All air fryers behave differently, so yours may cook faster or hotter than mine. Adjust your cook time as needed!
  • To test the sweet potatoes, try to pierce them with tines of a fork. When they’re ready, you should be able to easily press the fork through the skins and into the flesh of the potatoes. If you meet a lot of resistance, pop the sweet potatoes back into the air fryer for a few more minutes, then check again.
  • Sweet potatoes can be sweet or savory – it’s all in how you season them! Brown sugar, cinnamon, and toasted pecans are delicious in a sweet potato, especially if you want a sweeter taste or a holiday feel. In the mood for savory? You can’t go wrong with salt, fresh pepper, and butter.
  • I also like to use sweet potatoes as a vessel for my proteins. You can fill them with seasoned ground beef for a taco-style potato, or top them with shredded chicken and a creamy sauce. That’s what I did with my buffalo chicken stuffed sweet potatoes!

Equipment

  • running water
  • vegetable brush or clean dish towel
  • Paper towels
  • Fork
  • Air Fryer
  • 2 plates
  • Sharp knife

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 360° Fahrenheit.
  • While air fryer preheats, wash 2 medium sweet potatoes under running water, scrubbing potatoes with vegetable brush or clean dish towel to remove all surface dirt. After washing potatoes, dry potatoes well with paper towels.
  • Carefully pierce potatoes on all sides with tines of fork, creating small vent holes all over surfaces of potatoes. Be careful not to push fork tines too deeply into potatoes.
  • Optional: If desired, rub avocado oil onto sweet potato skins, covering potatoes completely. Sprinkle sea salt onto oiled potatoes.
  • Place sweet potatoes in air fryer basket and return basket to air fryer. Air fry sweet potatoes approximately 35 minutes.
  • After 35 minutes, check potatoes by attempting to pierce skins of potatoes with tines of fork. Potatoes are fully-cooked when fork can be easily pushed into potato skins and through to center of potatoes.
  • If potatoes are not ready after 35 minutes, return basket to air fryer and continue cooking potatoes, checking potatoes with fork every 3 minutes.
  • Once potatoes are cooked through, carefully remove potatoes from basket and transfer to plates. Gently slice open one side of sweet potatoes with sharp knife, then fluff insides of sweet potatoes with fork.
  • Serve sweet potatoes hot with preferred toppings.

Notes

  • Oil and salt are optional but add flavor and give the potatoes an extra-crisp skin!
  • All air fryers yield different results. The first time or two you try this method, pay close attention to the sweet potatoes and adjust your cook time as needed. Check on your sweet potatoes after 30 minutes if yours runs particularly hot.
