Beer-Infused Instant Pot Brats

Beer-infused Instant Pot brats are tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Best of all, they’re ready to eat in less than 20 minutes, so they’re perfect for quick dinners on busy evenings. Don’t worry if you’re not a beer fan, we’ve included alternate ingredients for you!
What Makes This Recipe So Good
- There’s nothing quite like a juicy, smoky, grilled bratwurst – but let’s face it. Sometimes you just don’t want to fool with the grill (or sometimes you do and it’s 15° Fahrenheit outside). The Instant Pot gives you perfectly cooked brats in no time with basically no effort.
- Sautéing the brats first gives you that delicious, crisp casing, and then they’re steamed in a sauna of light beer to make them tender and juicy with an added level of flavor. YUM.
Key Ingredients
Bratwurst – This method was tested and perfected using regular-sized bratwurst, not the jumbo bratwurst you might find at some butcher counters. I can’t say for sure if this cook time would work for the jumbo-sized brats. If you try it, please let me know how it goes!
Beer – Steaming the brats in beer infuses such a deep flavor into them, it’s amazing. If beer’s not your thing, you could also use beef broth, chicken broth, or even water will work. Just use the same amount of liquid indicated below so you don’t get a burn warning on your Instant Pot!
Chef’s Tips
- All appliances are different, and that goes for the trusty Instant Pot, too. What works for my Instant Pot in my kitchen might not work exactly the same for your Instant Pot in your kitchen. Keep an eye on these the first time or two that you cook them and make any time adjustments needed to perfect your brats.
- For even more flavor, add diced onions or even some sauerkraut to the liquid under the trivet before pressure cooking the sausages. You could also let the brats soak in the beer (like a marinade) for an hour or so before cooking them, to really lock in that flavor.

Instant Pot Brats
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 5 bratwursts 1 package, see Notes
- 1 cup light beer or beef broth
Equipment
- Instant Pot
- Instant Pot trivet
Instructions
- Add butter to Instant Pot and set to Sauté on High. Once butter melts and starts to bubble, add bratwurst and cook until browned, approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Turn brats over and brown other side, approximately 2 to 3 minutes more.
- Remove brats and put trivet in Instant Pot. Place brats on trivet and pour beer or beef broth over and into bottom of pot.
- Secure lid on Instant Pot and set valve to sealing position. Set to Manual High Pressure for 6 minutes – cook time will begin once pot is pressurized. After cook time ends, Natural Release for 10 minutes, then carefully Quick Release any remaining pressure and serve as desired.
Notes
- This method was tested and perfected using regular-sized brats, not jumbo brats.
- Don’t cut or poke holes in the bratwurst before you cook them. That’s not needed here!
- Use thawed bratwurst, not frozen. If you’re wanting to cook frozen brats, you’ll need to reverse the process – pressure cook them for 6 minutes, then remove the liquid and sauté them in the melted butter.
