Soft and chewy matcha brownies dotted with rich, creamy white chocolate chips are a matcha lover’s dream dessert! Moist, fudgy, and slightly cakey, they’re wonderfully sweet and earthy, and made with less than 10 ingredients.
What Makes This Recipe So Good
- These matcha brownies are everything you’d expect from brownies, but with an amazing subtle matcha tea flavor. They’re fudgy, rich, moist, decadent and you’ll get delicious white chocolate chips in almost every bite. Super satisfying!
- They’re super easy to make! The recipe is very similar to regular brownies made from scratch, but with matcha powder in place of cocoa powder. And how fun is that green color!
- These brownies are delicious without being overly sweet. The unique flavor of matcha is perfectly balanced with the sweetness of the white chocolate. And by the way, if you don’t care for white chocolate, you can totally use semi-sweet chocolate chips instead.
Chef’s Tips
- To check the doneness of the matcha brownies, insert a toothpick into the center of the pan after baking them for 30 minutes. The brownies are ready when the toothpick comes out with only a few moist crumbs. If you bake them for too long, they could get a little too crumbly, so when in doubt, take them out. They’ll continue cooking a bit as they rest in the baking pan.
- Because it’s the star of this recipe, I recommend using a good quality high grade matcha powder. It’ll definitely make a difference in the taste of the brownies. A low quality matcha can be a little too bitter and too earthy for something as decadent as matcha brownies.
- I know you’ll want to dig into these delicious brownies right out of the oven, but you must let them rest for about 20 minutes before slicing them. You’ll get nice clean edges that way, the brownies will slice more easily, and the texture will be perfectly moist.

Matcha Brownies with White Chocolate Chips
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter melted but not bubbling
- ¾ cup white sugar see Notes
- ¼ packed cup brown sugar see Notes
- 3 large eggs at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour see Notes
- 2 tablespoons ceremonial-grade matcha powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup high-quality white chocolate chips Ghirardelli, Godiva, Hershey's, etc.
Equipment
- Oven
- 8×8 baking dish
- spray cooking oil or butter
- Parchment paper
- Large mixing bowl or stand mixer bowl
- Hand mixer or stand mixer
- flour sifter
- Silicone spatula
- Sharp knife
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350° Fahrenheit. Grease bottom and sides of 8×8 baking dish with spray oil or butter, then line baking dish with parchment paper, allowing paper to hang out of pan slightly on two sides.
- Add melted butter, white sugar, and brown sugar to mixing bowl. Use hand mixer or stand mixer to beat ingredients together until mixture is fully combined.
- Add eggs and vanilla extract to mixing bowl. Resume mixing on medium speed until mixture is light and fluffy, approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Set mixer aside.
- Sift flour and matcha powder into mixing bowl. Sprinkle salt into bowl, then gently fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients with spatula, until ingredients are just incorporated.
- Add white chocolate chips to brownie batter. Gently fold batter with spatula until chocolate chips are evenly distributed. Be careful not to overmix or batter can become dense.
- Transfer batter to prepared baking dish and spread batter out evenly across dish. Place dish in preheated oven and bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center of brownies comes out cleanly or with very few crumbs.
- When brownies are fully baked, carefully remove baking dish from oven and set aside. Let brownies cool in baking dish 20 minutes or until completely cool. Once cool, use excess parchment paper to gently lift brownies out of baking dish, then slice brownies and serve as desired.
Notes
- Make it Added-Sugar Free: Use Granular Swerve instead of white sugar and Brown Swerve instead of brown sugar. You can use Lily’s or ChocZero white chocolate chips to avoid the added sugar in those, too.
- Make it Gluten Free: Use gluten-free all-purpose flour that contains xanthan gum.
