Thanks to this toasted grilled cheese recipe, putting together a deliciously crispy, melty grilled cheese sandwich has never been easier. You don’t even need to turn on the stove or heat up a skillet!
🍞 What Makes This Recipe So Good
- This toasted grilled cheese is ridiculously easy to make! All you need are 3 ingredients, a toaster, a microwave, and some damp paper towels. Before you know it, you’ve got a perfectly crisp, deliciously melty, hot and gooey grilled cheese without ever turning on the stove or dirtying a skillet.
- As written, this recipe is pretty basic. You can totally dress it up, though! A couple slices of tomato, some deli meat, or even crispy bacon are all great options. For the best results, make sure to add any extras after the cheese is melted. When you take the sandwich out of the microwave, just quickly open it, add whatever you like, close it, and enjoy!
🧀 Chef’s Tips
- Just like a stovetop or air fryer version, a toasted grilled cheese is fully customizable. Use your favorite breads and your favorite cheese (or blend of cheeses) so you end up with a totally enjoyable sandwich.
- You can use a regular pop-up toaster or toaster oven to toast your bread, whichever you have on hand. Toast your bread to your desired doneness, but if you typically prefer your bread barely toasted, consider giving it a little more time in the toaster for this sandwich. All the crunch and crispness will come from toasting the bread in the very first step, and that texture really makes a difference in the overall sandwich.
- Every microwave is different, so I recommend starting with just 30 seconds. You only need to microwave the sandwich until the cheese is melted and gooey, so check it after 30 seconds. If it’s not quite as melty as you’d like, microwave it for an additional 10 seconds, then check it again. Repeat as needed until you’ve got a perfect, hot, melty, gooey, crispy, toasted grilled cheese. Be really careful taking the sandwich out of the microwave – it’ll be hot!

Toasted Grilled Cheese (No Stove Needed)
Ingredients
- 2 slices bread of choice potato bread, buttermilk bread, whole wheat bread, etc.
- ½ tablespoon salted butter softened
- 3 slices cheese of choice Swiss, cheddar, muenster, havarti, etc.
- 1 pinch garlic powder optional
Equipment
- Toaster
- microwave-safe plate
- Paper towels
- water
- Microwave
Instructions
- Insert 2 slices of bread into toaster. Toast bread to desired doneness, then carefully transfer toast to microwave-safe plate.
- Lightly butter one side of each piece of toast. Sprinkle garlic powder over butter if desired.
- Place slices of cheese on top of butter on one piece of toast. Cover cheese with remaining piece of toast, with buttered side facing cheese. Set aside.
- Wet 1-2 paper towels and gently wring out excess water, leaving paper towels damp but not dripping. Carefully spread paper towels out flat, then wrap cheese sandwich in damp paper towels.
- Return sandwich to microwave-safe plate, with sandwich on top of seam of paper towels to keep sandwich wrapped. Place plate in microwave and microwave at full power for 30 seconds.
- After 30 seconds, check sandwich – cheese should be melted and bread should be soft and warm. If needed, return sandwich to microwave and continue heating in 10-second increments, checking doneness of sandwich after each burst.
- Once cheese has melted as desired, carefully remove grilled cheese from microwave and serve immediately. Note: sandwich will be very hot after microwaving. Use caution when handling.
Notes
- Toast: If you typically prefer your toast barely toasted, you’ll want to give the bread a little more time in the toaster for this sandwich.
- Cheese: Soft cheeses (mild cheddar, Swiss, provolone, muenster, havarti, mozzarella, etc.) will melt better and more easily than hard cheeses.
- Make it Gluten Free: Use a gluten-free bread. Make sure your cheese doesn’t contain any hidden gluten ingredients.
- Make it Low Carb: Use a low carb bread.
- Make it Dairy Free: Use a plant-based butter and dairy-free cheese.

I’ve been doing it differently because I usually put mayonnaise on one side of each bread than butter on the other side then I put in the toaster than I put cheese on the one piece of bread and then put the other bread on I microwaving it for like 20 seconds, is that good?

it was wet.

Hmm, we didn’t have that issue, but I’m sorry that was the result you got! It sounds like you may not have toasted the bread enough or may not have wrung out all the excess water from the paper towels. It’s hard to tell exactly without knowing more details. Regardless, hope you’ll give this one another try or find a grilled cheese that meets your needs. Hard to impress a master!
