This Chick-fil-A Sauce Copycat Recipe is basically everything a chicken nugget could ask for. A handful of pantry ingredients and 5 minutes of prep give you a ridiculously easy dipping sauce that’s creamy, sweet, tangy, and smoky. Pair it with my crispy Chick-fil-A copycat nuggets, and enjoy the full restaurant-style experience at home!

Why This Homemade Chick-fil-A Sauce Is So Good

  • You’ll want it on everything! Drizzle over roasted potatoes, dip your fries in it, spread it on a chicken sandwich; this creamy, tangy sweetness goes with a whole lot more than nuggets!
  • I threw in a little extra savory flavor. Garlic powder adds sooo much depth, while optional smoked paprika gives this version a smoky finish. You could leave it out, but I wouldn’t!
  • Lowest effort sauce ever. If you’re a busy lady (like me), this takes one bowl, one whisk, and no cooking. Just make it before you start dinner so it has time to chill.

Cheryl’s Tested Notes & Tips

  • Allow the sauce to sit the full 30 minutes. The cold fridge lets the flavors come together and gives the dried seasonings time to soak in the wet ingredients.
  • I whisk like my life depends on it. Scrape around the bottom and sides of the bowl so you don’t leave behind any pockets of mustard or mayonnaise. We want this mixed well!
  • For a sweeter sauce, add honey a little at a time. I play with the taste. Sometimes, I want it sweeter. For a more barbecue flavor, add a bit more barbecue sauce. If I find it tastes a bit flat, I add a pinch more salt, for example.

Ingredient Notes

Mayonnaise – full-fat mayo gives the sauce its rich, creamy texture, so stick with that. Light mayonnaise is thinner and not exactly what we want here!

Yellow mustard – brings that familiar tang. You could use Dijon; it makes a sharper variation (which can be super tasty).

Honey – I added this instead of sugar to keep the sweetness more balanced. And it adds a lovely depth to the sauce!

Barbecue sauce – choose what your family likes! A classic tomato-based sauce is generally what I grab. But you could go for spicy, vinegary, or more smoky varieties to play with the taste!

Smoked paprika – this is optional, but I encourage you to add this! It really gives the sauce an extra smoky depth. You could use regular paprika, which has a mild pepper flavor without the smokiness.

Garlic powder – this is part of the original recipe and NOT optional! It adds a yummy savory dimension without the bite of raw garlic.

Eat It With Copycat Chick-fil-A Chicken Nuggets

This Chick-fil-A sauce is sooo good with my copycat homemade nuggets. Here’s how they come together:

  1. Marinate the chicken. Cut chicken breasts into evenly sized, bite-sized pieces. Combine the milk, egg, and pickle juice, add the chicken, and refrigerate for 2–4 hours. Plan ahead for this step!
  2. Add the coating. Mix the flour, powdered sugar, malted milk powder, baking soda, ground mustard, paprika, salt, and pepper. Lift the chicken out of the marinade, let the excess drip off, and toss in the flour mixture until thoroughly coated.
  3. Fry in batches. Carefully add the coated chicken to hot oil, leaving space between the pieces. Cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and the centers reach 165°F on an instant-read thermometer. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
  4. Serve with your sauce. Enjoy the nuggets hot with the chilled Chick Fil A sauce and a side of fries. That crispy coating and creamy dip are such a match made in heaven!

Get the full instructions in my copycat Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets recipe, and use the sauce here in place of its honey mustard dip.

And here are other foods you can eat this tasty sauce with:

  • Waffle fries or potato wedges. Crisp, salty potatoes are pretty much made for this creamy dip. Sweet potato fries work, too, especially for that sweet-and-savory combo!
  • Chicken sandwiches and hamburgers. Spread it on a brioche bun or tortilla, then add chicken, lettuce, and pickles. Replace that “special sauce” for burgers with the Chick-fil-a version; it’s seriously delicious!
  • Roasted vegetables. Spoon a little over broccoli or potatoes, or you could cut up some bell peppers for a crunchy veggie snack.
  • Rice bowls! Thinly sliced pan-seared beef over rice or a spicy chicken bowl with this sauce drizzled or jazzed up with extra seasonings means this sauce is a great base for other recipes!

Storage & Make-Ahead

  • Refrigerator: I’ve been able to keep this sauce for up to 2 weeks. Just make sure to store it in a proper airtight container.
  • Freezing: This is not something to freeze, as it’s best used after making it.
  • Make ahead: I totally make this ahead if I’m hosting a party, so I’ll make this like a day ahead and bring it out when ready to serve.

Recipe FAQs

  1. How do you make Chick-fil-A sauce? My version combines mayonnaise, yellow mustard, honey, barbecue sauce, garlic powder, optional smoked paprika, and salt.
  2. Does this taste exactly like Chick-fil-A sauce? Totally inspired by the original, mine has a similar flavor profile, but it isn’t the restaurant’s formula. You can mix up the flavor a bit by the type of BBQ sauce you use, and I add smoked paprika.
