Grilled asparagus wrapped in foil is the easiest, fastest, best way to cook perfect asparagus in the summer. Lightly seasoned with olive oil, salt, and pepper, this veggie side dish pairs beautifully with grilled burgers, grilled chicken, or even grilled crab legs.
What Makes This Recipe So Good
- Grilled asparagus in foil is a super easy-to-make summer side dish that’s incredibly versatile. We use a basic seasoning here to the veggies go really well with anything you might be grilling up – burgers, ribs, steaks, chicken, scallops, and crab legs.
- You can grill asparagus directly on the grate, yes. Wrapping it in foil, though, guarantees the asparagus is perfectly seasoned throughout the entire cook time. The oil (or butter), salt, and pepper won’t be lost between the grates – the foil keeps it all tightly wrapped around the asparagus. The result? Deliciously flavorful, perfectly cooked asparagus and no messy grill grates.
Chef’s Tips
- Be careful not to overcook the asparagus! It’s really easy to do since you’ve got it wrapped up nicely in a little foil package, so make sure you’re checking the asparagus regularly. It shouldn’t need more than 10 minutes depending on your grill, but if you’re opening the lid frequently to check on other food, it might take a little longer. Cook the asparagus just until you can easily pierce it with a fork. Too long and it’ll be mushy and unpleasant.
- You want to trim the ends of the asparagus stalks before you grill them. The ends are tough and woody and it’s easiest to just deal with them right when you get started. To trim them, take one fresh asparagus stalk, hold it by the very end of the stalk, and hold it straight up. The stalk will start to bend slightly, and that point is where the stalk changes from tough and woody to tender and delicious. That is where you want to break it – and you literally just take it in both hands and snap it right in that spot. Now you can use your asparagus stalk as a guide for the others. Line them all up and use a sharp knife to cut away the ends from the other stalks so they’re all roughly the same length.

Grilled Asparagus in Foil
Ingredients
- 1 pound asparagus ends trimmed
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt more or less to taste
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper more or less to taste
- fresh lemon juice to taste, optional, for serving
- grated parmesan cheese to taste, optional, for serving
Equipment
- Grill
- Aluminum foil
- Tongs
- Fork
Instructions
- Preheat grill to medium-high heat, approximately 375° to 450° Fahrenheit. Spread out large sheet of foil on flat work surface.
- Place trimmed asparagus on sheet of foil. Drizzle olive oil evenly over asparagus, then sprinkle salt and pepper on top of asparagus.
- Wrap foil sheet over and around asparagus, covering vegetables completely, and seal edges tightly. Place foil-wrapped asparagus on grill and close lid. Grill asparagus 4 to 5 minutes, then flip foil packet and grill another 4 to 5 minutes until asparagus can be easily pierced with fork.
- Remove foil packet from grill and unwrap asparagus. Discard foil and transfer asparagus to serving platter or individual plates. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over asparagus and top with grated parmesan cheese, if desired. Serve immediately.
Notes
- To trim the ends of the asparagus, hold one asparagus stalk upright one-by-one and you’ll notice the stalk start to bend. Snap the asparagus in the spot where it bends and discard the woody end, then line up the remaining asparagus and cut the ends off to match.
