What We Love About This Recipe

  1. This buffalo tofu is such a great vegetarian recipe for buffalo sauce fans! It has all the delicious flavors and spice of buffalo wings, but without the meat.
  2. The tofu comes out with a nice crispy crust. This method of cooking tofu is super easy and pretty much foolproof. After tossing the tofu in a seasoned cornstarch mixture, it gets baked until perfect and crispy. Such a satisfying bite!
  3. This recipe is incredibly easy to make! Tofu is a great vegetarian ingredient that can sound a little intimidating sometimes, but I promise you, once you’ve tried this method, you’ll want to do it over and over again. The buffalo sauce is a quick and easy homemade one with only a handful of ingredients. And you can easily adjust the amount of hot sauce to your preference.

Cheryl’s Tips

  • For best results, extra firm tofu works best for this recipe. I also highly recommend not skipping pressing the tofu to remove as much water as possible. If the tofu is too moist, it won’t get crispy. Don’t worry if you don’t have a tofu press though, you can press it without one. You’ll need a plate, paper towels or a lint-free dish towel, a cutting board and a heavy object, such as a large can, or heavy pan. First, you’ll drain the tofu block from its container, then wrap it in multiple paper towels. Line a plate with more paper towels (or a dish towel), place the wrapped tofu on top. Add a cutting board on top of the wrapped tofu, then add a heavy object on top right in the middle, and let sit for about 30 minutes. Check it halfway, as you might need to change up the paper towels if they’re soaked.
  • Once the buffalo tofu bites are being tossed in the hot sauce, they should be served right away. Tofu will absorbs the sauce, and the bites won’t be as crispy if they sit in the sauce for too long. Still super delicious though!
  • You can adjust the amount of spice to your liking by simply adding more or less Frank’s hot sauce. 3 tablespoons to 1/4 cup will give you a nice medium heat, but feel free to add 2 ore 3 more tablespoons if you prefer it hot.

Equipment

  • tofu press optional
  • Paper towels optional
  • Oven
  • Small bowl
  • gallon size Ziploc bag
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • spray cooking oil optional
  • medium bowl
  • Tongs or spatula

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400° Fahrenheit. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • Add 4 tablespoons cornstarch, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon salt, ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper to small bowl. Mix ingredients together until well blended. Set aside.
  • Tear 1 16-ounce block extra-firm tofu (drained well and pressed) into bite-sized chunks, or cut block of tofu into small cubes for more uniform appearance.
  • Place one-third of tofu pieces in large sealable food-safe plastic bag, then add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixture. Seal bag and shake until tofu pieces are fully coated in cornstarch mixture.
  • Transfer coated tofu pieces to prepared baking sheet, arranging tofu in single, even layer, making sure tofu pieces do not touch or overlap. Repeat process until all tofu pieces have been coated in cornstarch mixture and arranged on baking sheet.

  • Return baking sheet to oven and bake tofu 15 minutes more.
  • While tofu bakes, melt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter in medium microwave-safe bowl. Add ¼ cup Frank's hot sauce and ¼ teaspoon garlic powder to melted butter and mix ingredients together until fully incorporated.
  • Carefully remove baked tofu from oven. Add pieces of tofu to bowl of buffalo sauce and toss or stir to coat fully. Transfer coated tofu to wire cooling rack and set aside. Repeat until all tofu has been coated in sauce.
  • Once all pieces have been coated, serve tofu as desired with blue cheese dressing or ranch dressing, carrot sticks, and celery sticks.
