Why not change things up this Cinco de Mayo by making a Smoked Margarita? Our already-perfect classic margarita recipe (perfectly balanced and just ever so slightly sweet) is taken to the next level with a layer of delicious smoky flavor that is so simple to add using a smoking saucer and either cognac cherry or applewood wood chips.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • This smoked margarita recipe hits all the right flavor notes: zesty, tangy, sweet, salty, refreshing, and smoky. One sip and you won’t believe that you’ve made something that tastes like it came from a fancy cocktail bar at home.
  • One simple piece of bar kit, a smoking saucer, elevates the classic margarita using just one extra step and just 30 extra seconds while you mix your drink.
  • You can easily double the recipe to make a pair of smoked margaritas for an at-home date night. As for snack pairings, keep things simple with some homemade tomatillo red chili salsa and chips, or take things up a notch with a pan of our healthy baked nachos!

Chef’s Tips

  • This method can also be used to smoke flavored margaritas – simply follow the same method using your favorite margarita recipe!
  • Mezcal in place of the tequila will make a slightly more complex margarita.
  • There are so many different rim options depending on what you fancy: just salt (choose a nice sea salt for the best flavor), sugar and salt for a bit of sweetness, or Tajin and salt for a spicy kick!

Equipment

  • Smoking saucer
  • Cognac cherry or applewood chips

Instructions

  • Rim a rocks glass with lime and salt (half rim looks best). Fill with fresh ice.
  • Smoke the glass using your smoking saucer (cognac cherry or applewood both work well) and set aside.
  • Add tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and agave to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake hard until very cold and slightly diluted — about 15 seconds.
  • Double strain into the smoked glass. Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge.

Notes

Use mezcal: Mezcal in place of the tequila will make a slightly more complex margarita.
Pick your rim: There are so many different rim options depending on what you fancy: just salt (choose a nice sea salt for the best flavor), sugar and salt for a bit of sweetness, or Tajin and salt for a spicy kick!
