Don’t want to fire up the grill tonight? Then these 40-minute Oven Baked BBQ Chicken Thighs are the way to go — juicy, tender, and loaded with smoky-sweet flavor thanks to a simple spice rub. They’re easy for busy weeknights but delicious enough to bust out at a cookout if your barbecue is overloaded already!

What Makes These BBQ Baked Chicken Thighs Different
- My hubby would protest this, because grilling is one of his things, but this doesn’t need one! You get all that smoky, sticky BBQ goodness right in your oven, making this a fast option any time of year.
- I made this one simple to do and mostly hands-off; all you need is chicken, your favorite BBQ rub, BBQ sauce, and a few everyday staples to create a delicious main.
- These chicken thighs reheat super well for lunches, salads, sandwiches, wraps, and grain/rice bowls throughout the week.
Cheryl’s Tested Notes Tips
- Pat the chicken totally, completely dry. I sound like a broken record by repeating this tip, but removing moisture truly helps the skin crisp up nicely and allows the seasoning to stick.
- Bake on a wire rack if possible. I know, right? You wouldn’t think, but doing this makes a noticeable difference in texture by letting heat circulate underneath the chicken.
- Big one: don’t add the BBQ sauce too early! The sugars in BBQ sauce can burn if baked for too long. I’ve done that in the past and came out with charred meat; do not follow in my footsteps.
- My secret tip is to brush on the last layer of sauce AFTER baking. This gives the chicken a glossy finish and another burst of fresh BBQ flavor.

Ingredient Notes
- Chicken thighs are the star here. Trust me, using bone-in, skin-on thighs is the way to go because they stay incredibly juicy while developing a to-die-for crispy skin. Drumsticks work too, if that’s what you have, or use a mix of both!
- Pick a BBQ rub that’s your jam. Sweet, smoky, spicy, or homemade—they all work, so grab your fave. The rub builds the first layer of flavor and creates a delicious crust as the chicken bakes.
- I love a smoky BBQ sauce. Since it’s brushed on at the end, you’ll really taste it. Use one you totally enjoy (sweet, spicy, or smoky), and if you need this recipe to be gluten-free, Paleo, or Whole30, just choose a sauce that fits your dietary needs (read the labels carefully).
- Apple cider vinegar makes this dish! Sounds far-fetched, but when I add a splash, it brightens the BBQ sauce, balances the sweetness, and creates an incredible sticky glaze instead of something that’s overly sugary.
- Hot sauce is optional, but I almost always add it. For folks who like gentle spice levels, adding hot sauce won’t make the chicken spicy—it simply adds a little depth and keeps the sauce from tasting one-note.
Serving Suggestions
- Classic BBQ sides. You can’t go wrong pairing this dish with coleslaw, baked beans, corn on the cob, potato salad, or macaroni salad for the yummiest cookout dinner.
- Roasted vegetables. If you want to motivate your kids to eat their veggies, serve this with sides of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, or green beans, which add a nice freshness alongside those rich BBQ flavors.
- Mashed potatoes. I think it’s a miss if you don’t serve creamy mashed potatoes; you’re missing out because the potatoes soak up every bit of that sticky BBQ sauce!
- Protein rice bowls. If you do meal prep (like me), slice the chicken over steamed rice with roasted vegetables for an easy weeknight meal or for lunch over a few days.
- Cornbread. I love an old-school cornbread, which pairs so well with classic BBQ sides.
Storage & Make-Ahead
- Refrigerator: Store leftover chicken in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
- Freezer: You can freeze the cooked chicken for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheating: Warm in a 350°F oven until heated through, or microwave gently. I recommend brushing with extra BBQ sauce before serving to liven up the flavors again.
- Make-Ahead: I’ve seasoned the chicken up to 24 hours before baking and have been able to fit in other things on a busy day until I’m ready to bake it. I’ve also mixed the BBQ sauce several days ahead and refrigerated it until I’m ready to use it.
Recipe FAQs
- Can I use boneless chicken thighs? Of course, just note that boneless thighs cook faster, so begin checking for doneness around 20–25 minutes.
- Why bake the chicken on a wire rack? A valid question, but there’s good reason to do this! The rack allows hot air to circulate around the chicken so the skin crisps instead of sitting in rendered fat.
- Can I grill these instead? Yes! Grill over indirect heat until nearly done, brush with sauce during the final few minutes, and cook until the internal temperature reaches 185–190°F.
