This Crockpot Apple Butter Recipe turns sweet-tart apples, brown sugar, and cozy spices into a rich, silky spread that tastes amazing on warm biscuits, swirled into oatmeal, or I like to sneak a spoonful straight from the jar. Set it, forget it, and let your house smell like fall baking without the effort!

What Makes This Apple Butter Different

  • There’s plenty of taste dimension to this crockpot apple butter! Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples balance sweetness and tang, while vanilla rounds out the warm spices and a splash of lemon juice deepens the rich apple flavor.
  • No standing over a stove simmering apples down; a long, gentle cook captures the flavor and rich brown color with only the occasional stirring needed. The crockpot I use religiously is my GreenLife cooker, in case you were wondering!
  • My recipe calls for thick and silky without added thickeners. Blending makes it smooth, and cooking uncovered lets excess moisture evaporate. No cornstarch or added pectin in sight here!

Cheryl’s Tested Notes & Tips

  • I peel for the smoothest texture. Apple skins can leave little flecks behind, even after blending. Soo, I use an apple peeler, like this one. Slice the apples into fairly even pieces so they soften at a similar rate.
  • You don’t need to add water or cider. Keep the lid on during the first stage so the apples release their juices without drying out.
  • Friends, blend carefully. Keep the immersion blender’s blade fully submerged to prevent hot splatters. If you’re using a countertop blender, work in small batches; you’ll be able to blend more smoothly this way.
  • I trust the texture more than the clock. Slow cookers and apples vary. I test donenes by spooning a little apple butter onto a cool plate: it should mound softly without a watery ring. It will thicken more as it cools, so keep that in mind when judging texture.

Ingredient Notes

  • Try to do an equal-ish mix of apples. Honeycrisp and Granny Smith give that sweetness and tang, but it’s fine if the ratio isn’t 100%. Fuji or Gala can replace Honeycrisp, but keep some tart apples to balance the sweetness.
  • You can play with the brown sugar: Light brown sugar gives a gentler flavor, which is what I prefer and works best here. Dark brown sugar works, too, but its stronger molasses flavor makes the apple butter taste richer and can overshadow the apples a bit.
  • The seasonings really add richness. I love the combo of cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. Be sure to measure cloves carefully, as they’re powerful!
  • Stir in vanilla extract after the initial slow cook. Just so its flavor doesn’t get lost during those long hours. You could use real vanilla bean seeds here, but extract is low effort and still delicious.
  • Don’t skip the splash of lemon juice! It’s the great balancer, keeping the apple butter from tasting overly sweet. Fresh or bottled lemon juice works, so choose what you’ve got in the fridge.

Cozy Serving Suggestions

  • Biscuits, toast, or English muffins. Warm bread is perfect for the silky texture of this apple butter. It’s one of the main ways I eat it! Try these frozen biscuits in the Air Fryer to eat this combo fast!
  • Swirl it into oatmeal or plain yogurt. The apples and spices bring sweetness to a simple breakfast, and it’s an easy topping. My overnight oat recipe is perfect for this yummy purpose.
  • Crackers and cheese. A total party appetizer built in. Spread a little apple butter on a cracker, then top with a slice of sharp cheddar. Also great for an after-school snack for the kiddos.
  • Pork, pork, pork. Its sweet-tart flavor complements savory pork chops or tenderloin. Serve it at the table, or brush on a little near the end of cooking so the sugar doesn’t scorch. You could use this pork chops with apples recipe and add the apple butter instead.

Storage & Make-Ahead

  • Refrigerator: This apple butter spread keeps up to 1 week. I like to keep it in a mason jar with a lid that seals well.
  • Freezing: I use small freezer-safe containers, and you can store for up to 3 months. Leave about ½ inch of headspace for expansion!
  • Making it ahead: This is all about making ahead, and it works so well for a week’s worth of breakfasts and snack times. I usually make it a day before I want to use it.

Recipe FAQs

  1. What’s the difference between apple butter and applesauce? Apple butter cooks longer so more moisture evaporates, thus creating a thicker spread with a more concentrated apple flavor. Applesauce is generally looser and lighter in color. And despite the name, apple butter has no butter!
  2. Why is my slow cooker apple butter still runny? It usually needs more time uncovered so the moisture can evaporate. Keep cooking on low, stirring occasionally, and check a cooled spoonful before deciding it needs longer.

InstacartGet Recipe Ingredients

Equipment

  • Large slow cooker approximately 6 quarts
  • immersion blender or countertop blender

Instructions

  • Add 5 pounds peeled, cored, and sliced apples to a large slow cooker.
  • Add 1½ cups packed light brown sugar, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground cloves, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Stir to coat the apples evenly.
  • Cover and cook on low for 9 hours, stirring once or twice if possible, until the apples are very soft and dark brown.
  • Remove the lid and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon lemon juice.
  • Use an immersion blender to purée until completely smooth, keeping the blade submerged to prevent splatters. Alternatively, carefully blend in small batches in a blender suitable for hot liquids, following its venting instructions, then return the mixture to the slow cooker.
  • Cook uncovered on low for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally and scraping the sides and bottom, until thick and spreadable.
  • To check the consistency, spoon a little apple butter onto a cool plate. It should mound softly without a watery ring. Keep in mind that it will thicken more as it cools.

Notes

Slow cooker timing: Plan on about 11 hours total on low—9 hours covered, then 2 hours uncovered. Timing can range from 10–12 hours depending on your slow cooker and the apples’ moisture content. If the apples aren’t soft enough to blend after 9 hours, continue cooking covered until tender. Use the low setting, not warm.
Apple mix: Aim for roughly equal amounts of sweet and tart apples; about 2½ pounds Honeycrisp and 2½ pounds Granny Smith. Fuji or Gala can replace the Honeycrisp; keep about half the apples tart to balance the brown sugar.
